Key West, FL
GPP participant saves $250k
The Green Partnership Program™ (GPP) offered by KBI allowed the City of Key West to solve all of their tree surround issues while minimizing costs and maximizing installation flexibility. The GPP is designed for agencies with their own maintenance staff, including municipal, commercial or large campus facilities. This program provides the training and tools to solve everyday infrastructure problems.
Maintenance staff are trained and certified by KBI instructors in the use of KBI Flexi®-Pave. KBI Flexi®-Pave is bound in place and binds to adjoining surfaces so there is no lifting, cracking or product migration which can cause liability and stormwater issues.
water quality remediation using KBI Flexi®-Clean
Traditional remediation options were reviewed, including drop-in units and underground tank systems, both of which would have required heavy construction, significant downtime and more depth than the site allowed due to the low elevation and high water table. The existing site and drain provides less than 1 foot of fall, requiring a shallow, unobtrusive solution. This led to the selection of KBI’s Flexi®-Clean system.
The system starts with a layer of KBI Flexi®-Clean, powered by Osorb®, a bioreactive media that treats stormwater as it passes through the material. Once the material has been installed, the surface is capped with a structural layer of KBI Flexi®-Pave, a porous, recycled tire and aggregate system allowing for high-volume drainage of stormwater from the site. This proprietary combination allows for high-volume conveyance of stormwater coupled with effective point treatment before allowing the water to exit the property into the stormwater drain.
woodlands trail provides ADA compliance
ADA compliance required an update to an existing soft surface trail. Asphalt and other trail material options were considered but deemed unacceptable because of their issues with cracking, lifting, standing water and on-going maintenance costs.
KBI Flexi®-Pave was chosen as the solution to all these issues. KBI Flexi®-Pave is a porous, non-cracking, and flexible construction material that solves many common challenges associated with the construction and maintaining of trails.
solving watering and tree health issues
Other options available, such as loose products, have migration issues which can cause increased liability on top of the maintenance and stormwater problems. Traditional tree grates are expensive to install, lift from root intrusion, and are costly to maintain and service. These issues led to the selection of KBI’s Flexi®-Pave as the tree surround solution.
KBI Flexi®-Pave is a structural, porous, non-cracking construction material that allows for high-volume drainage. It is made from three parts: wire-free recycled tires, rock aggregate and KBI’s proprietary binding agent. KBI Flexi®-Pave is assembled at the jobsite and installed by hand, requiring a very small installation footprint. The product cures within 12 to 24 hours, providing for minimized downtime.
KBI was able to easily install the tree surrounds with little setup time and cleanup, making for a quick, efficient install.
